Digital Accessibility
Accessibility Statement
Last updated: October 2026. Notum is dedicated to ensuring digital accessibility for all learners, including individuals with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply relevant accessibility standards under European and international law.
1. Our Commitment to Accessibility
Notum believes that knowledge tools must be universally accessible to every learner. We are committed to ensuring our digital flashcard platform, spaced repetition engines, and user interfaces conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA and European Standard EN 301 549 ("Accessibility requirements for ICT products and services").
This statement outlines our compliance pursuant to the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882, Annex V), transposed into Danish legislation via Lov om tilgængelighedskrav for produkter og tjenester, and aligns with the digital accessibility principles of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA Title III) and Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act.
Conformance Status: Notum is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content or certain community-uploaded third-party assets may not yet fully adhere to the stricter technical specifications, though active remediation sprints are ongoing.
2. Accessibility Features on Notum
We have engineered core architectural and visual accessibility features across the Notum platform:
- Keyboard Navigation & Focus Visibility: All core functions,
navigation menus, study modes (Standard Flashcard Review, Quiz Mode, Speed Review, and Type-In Mode),
and account management settings are fully operable using a keyboard alone. We maintain a logical
tab order and enforce prominent, high-contrast focus rings (
focus-visible:ring-2 focus-visible:ring-primary) on all interactive controls. - Study Mode Keyboard Shortcuts: Learners can operate study sessions seamlessly via keyboard commands: Space to flip cards, number keys 1–4 for SuperMemo-2 confidence grading (Again, Hard, Good, Easy), and arrow keys for navigation.
- Semantic Structure & Screen Reader Support: Our interface is built
with semantic HTML5 elements (
<main>,<nav>,<header>,<footer>). We provide descriptivearia-labelattributes for icon-only buttons, modal dialogs witharia-modal="true", and ARIA live regions (aria-live="polite"andaria-live="assertive") for dynamic status updates and error notifications. - Mathematical & Scientific Notation: LaTeX mathematical notation is rendered client-side via KaTeX with embedded accessible MathML and screen-reader readable text alternatives, allowing visually impaired learners to engage with STEM curriculum.
- Color Contrast & Visual Presentation: Text and essential user interface components meet or exceed the WCAG AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against adjacent backgrounds (3:1 for large text).
- Customizable Themes (ThemeCustomizer): Learners can select high-contrast dark and light themes, adjust color accents, and personalize visual styling in their Profile settings to accommodate light sensitivity or visual impairments.
- Zoom & Responsive Fluidity: The application supports zooming up to 200% in modern web browsers without loss of functionality, truncation of text, or overlapping elements.
- Reduced Motion Support: Notum respects operating system and browser
preferences for reduced motion (
prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) by automatically disabling non-essential transitions and card flipping animations.
