#1
Term
Subordinate Clause Word Order: weil vs. dass
Definition
Rule: In subordinate clauses (Nebensätze) introduced by weil (because) or dass (that), the conjugated verb is pushed to the very end of the clause.
Examples:
  • Weil: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. (I am staying at home because I am sick.)
  • Dass: Ich weiß, dass du Deutsch lernst. (I know that you are learning German.)
#2
Term
Two-Way Prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)
Definition
Rule: The 9 prepositions (an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen) take:
  • Accusative for movement/change of location (Wohin? / Where to?)
  • Dative for fixed position/location (Wo? / Where at?)
Examples:
  • Accusative (Direction): Ich stelle das Buch auf den Tisch. (I put the book onto the table.)
  • Dative (Location): Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (The book is lying on the table.)
#3

Passive Voice Construction (Vorgangspassiv)
Definition
Rule: Formed using werden (conjugated in Position 2) + Partizip II (at the end). To specify the agent, use von + Dative.
Examples:
  • Präsens: Das Auto wird von dem Mechaniker repariert. (The car is being repaired by the mechanic.)
  • Präteritum: Das Haus wurde 1990 gebaut. (The house was built in 1990.)
#4
Term
Genitive Prepositions (wegen, während, trotz, anstatt)
Definition
Rule: These B1 prepositions require the Genitive case (des/der/eines/einer).
Examples:

  • Trotz: Trotz der Kälte ging er spazieren. (Despite the cold, he went for a walk.)
  • Während: Während der Reise hat sie viel gelesen. (During the trip, she read a lot.)

#6
Term
Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) for Polite Requests & Wishful Thinking
Definition
Rule: Used for hypothetical scenarios, wishes, and polite requests. Formed with würde + Infinitive or special forms for aux/modal verbs (hätte, wäre, könnte).
Examples:
  • Polite Request: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?)
  • Wish: Ich würde gerne mehr reisen. (I would like to travel more.)
  • Hypothetical: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, wäre ich glücklich. (If I had time, I would be happy.)
#7
Term

Definition
Rule: Indirect questions act as subordinate clauses (conjugated verb moves to the end).
  • Use ob for Yes/No questions (if / whether).
  • Use W-Words (wie, was, wo, wann) for open questions.
Examples:
  • Yes/No: Ich möchte wissen, ob du mitkommst. (I would like to know if you are coming along.)

Examples:
  • Ich muss einen Pass haben. (I must have a passport.)
  • Der Arzt sagt, ich soll mehr Sport machen. (The doctor says I should do more exercise.)
