Two-Way Prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

Definition

Prepositions that take Accusative for movement/change of location (Wohin?) and Dative for fixed location/position (Wo?).
The 9 Prepositions: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen.
  • Accusative: Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. (Movement)
  • Dative: Das Bild hängt an der Wand. (Position)

Konjunktiv II: Expressing Wishes & Hypotheses

Definition

Used for polite requests, hypothetical situations, and wishes.
  • General Rule: würde + Infinitive (at end)
  • Ich würde gerne nach Berlin reisen.
  • High-frequency irregular forms:
  • haben → hätte (Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.)
  • sein → wäre (Das wäre toll!)
  • werden → würde
  • Modal verbs: können → könnte, müssen → müsste

Passive Voice (Vorgangspassiv)

Definition

Focuses on the action rather than who is performing it.
Structure: werden (conjugated) + ... + Partizip II (Past Participle)
  • Present: Das Auto wird repariert. (The car is being repaired.)
  • Past (Präteritum): Das Auto wurde repariert. (The car was repaired.)
  • Agent (by): Use von + Dative (von dem Mechaniker).

Relative Clauses (Relativsätze)

Definition

Subordinate clauses providing extra details about a noun. The verb goes to the end of the clause.
Relative Pronoun Case: Determined by its role in the relative clause; gender/number comes from the reference noun.
  • Nominative: Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Lehrer.
  • Accusative: Das Buch, das ich lese, ist interessant.
  • Dative: Die Frau, der ich helfe, ist nett.

Subordinating Conjunctions (Nebensätze)

Definition

Conjunctions that send the conjugated verb to the very end of the clause.
Key B1 Conjunctions:
  • weil (because)
  • dass (that)
  • wenn (if / when - present/repeatable past)
  • obwohl (although)
  • da (since/as)
  • als (when - single event in past)
Example: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.

Genitive Prepositions (wegen, trotz, während, anstatt)

Definition

Common B1 prepositions that require the Genitive case:
  • wegen (because of): wegen des Wetters
  • trotz (despite): trotz der Kälte
  • während (during): während des Urlaubs
  • anstatt / statt (instead of): statt eines Taxis
Note: In spoken German, Dative is sometimes used, but Genitive is correct for B1 exams.

Separable vs. Inseparable Verb Prefixes

Definition

Verbs change meaning based on prefixes.
  • Separable (Trennbare): Stress on prefix. Split in present tense.
  • Prefixes: ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, vor-, zu-
  • Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
  • Inseparable (Untrennbare): Prefix stays attached.
  • Prefixes: be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, ver-, zer-
  • Ich verstehe die Frage nicht.

Modal Verbs in Past Tense (Präteritum)

Definition

In B1, modal verbs are almost always used in Präteritum (Simple Past) rather than Perfekt.
  • können → konnte (could / was able to)
  • müssen → musste (had to)
  • dürfen → durfte (was allowed to)
  • wollen → wollte (wanted to)
  • sollen → sollte (was supposed to)
Example: Gestern konnte ich nicht kommen, weil ich arbeiten musste.
